Rani Mukherjee was born to Ram Mukherjee, one of the founder members of Filmalaya Studios and his wife Krishna, a playback singer. Rani Mukherjee has a brother in Raja Mukherjee, a film producer and director. Bengali film actress and national award winner Debashree Roy is her maternal aunt while Kajol, the famous Bollywood actress is her cousin. A trained Odissi dancer, Rani Mukherjee had her school education at Maneckji Cooper High School and later graduated from Mithibai College in Mumbai.

Rani Mukherjee made her debut in movies in 1996 with "Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat". Two years later she got a big break with Karan Johar's romantic flick with "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" {1998} which went on to become a big blockbusters of the year. Rani Mukherjee's wonderful performance in the movie has won her several awards including Filmfare Awards. Rani Mukherjee has since appeared in several blockbuster movies. Her stunning performances in "Saathiya" {2002}, "Hum Tum" and "Veer-Zaara" {both 2004}, "Bunty Aur Babli" {2005}, "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna" {2006} has won her critical acclaim from the critics and fans alike.
